Position: The Director of Public Works is responsible for an annual operating budget of $162 million with a current staffing complement of 368 full time employees (FTEs). Saint Paul Public Works is a nationally accredited department responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the street, sewer and drainage infrastructure systems in the City of Saint Paul. One of the largest engineering organizations in Minnesota, Saint Paul Public Works is responsible for more than 1,874 miles of streets, 806 miles of sanitary sewer, 450 miles of storm sewer, 107 bridges, and 145 miles of bike lanes. The department also engineers the traffic, signal and lighting infrastructure for the City, in addition to coordinating Citywide recycling and garbage efforts. The salary range for this position is $123,552 - $169,000.

Key Accountabilities:
• Through its dedicated employees, Public Works design, build, maintain and operate public infrastructure in a manner that respects the environment and preserves these assets for future generations.
• Devise departmental priorities and strategies for the advancement of the public works department
• Successfully deal with confidential, complex situations involving coordination and consultation with high level constituents.
• Critically analyze operations, collaboratively design and institute improvements without disruption of existing operations.
• Provide leadership and support toward the successful and effective performance of staff.

Minimum Qualifications:
• A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Seven (7) years of progressively-responsible, professional experience in public works construction projects and/or engineering design.
• Three (3) years of management experience.
• Demonstrated successful political and organizational acumen within a complex unit or organization serving multiple constituencies.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills to include verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
