We are seeking an Associate Director of Messaging and Content Strategy on the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Development team within Harvard Alumni AffInstitutes and Development.

Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development Communications team develops and executes on strategic, integrated communications, marketing, and donor relations plans to deepen prospect engagement and inspire philanthropic investment in the FAS. In support of FAS fundraising priorities, the Development Communications team manages a through-line of communication to donors and prospects, to include digital engagement strategies; gift proposals and appeal language development; and stewardship, acknowledgement and recognition plans for donors across the gift scale.
The FAS Development effort is large and varied-from annual and reunion giving to planned and principal gifts-and leverages a broad corps of volunteer solicitors. In a decentralized environment where many staff are communicating externally, this position will serve as a hub of content and content strategy-a compiler and creator of messages and storytelling-and provide guidance for use in development activities. The Associate Director will ensure that all messaging is integrated, coordinated, complementary, and strategic across audiences and channels.

The person hired into this role has the exciting opportunity to leverage the momentum and energy coming out of the recently concluded Harvard Campaign for Arts and Sciences to work under new leadership and with new fundraising priorities to inspire giving and engagement.
Develops and drives FAS Development's content strategy across a variety of print and digital channels. Writes and directs content including web copy, print report copy, talking points for volunteers and senior administrators, and event marketing messaging. Informs editorial strategy for flagship communications projects. Informs and develops storyboards for videos and multimedia assets.
In conjunction with Academic and Development Coordination (ADC), translates and disseminates priority fundraising messages for FAS Development. Additionally, works closely with colleagues on the Development Communications team, FAS fundraisers, FAS academic leadership, and Harvard Public AffInstitutes and Communications (HPAC) to craft cases for support, messaging regarding specific fundraising priorities, and examples of impact that support the fundraising need for the FAS as priorities emerge.
Serves as the central resource for content and content strategy and provides guidance for use in FAS Development activities. Identifies and curates Harvard content for FAS Development use. Stays abreast of digital and print media put out by various FAS units. Regularly connects and coordinates with other editorial departments within and relevant to the FAS (including HPAC, Harvard College, the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University Development Office, the Harvard Alumni Association, Admissions, College social media, and Athletics) to identify ways donor-facing messaging can be complementary and coordinated, and how departments can leverage each others work. Attends and/or convenes FAS-wide and local editorial meetings and stays appraised of new content as it develops.
Partners with and provides content as needed to Direct Marketing and Participation, the team responsible for the direct-response marketing programs associated with the Harvard College Fund, Parents, and Graduate School Fund annual giving. Monitors and evaluates analytics related to audience-specific marketing strategies, integrating marketing channels with fundraising efforts, to assesses trends and develop corresponding plans for optimal results. Develops analysis summaries by marketing campaign to inform teams of effectiveness and opportunities for improvement.
Serves as a liaison to HPAC for both proactive and reactive messaging to FAS alumni and donors. Determines when and how to share campus news with FAS alumni. Keeps FAS Development team appraised of the media landscape surrounding Harvard, philanthropy, and higher education via regular news and media updates. Partners closely with HPAC to develop reactive messaging for fundraisers to use in response to Harvard news. Oversees FAS gift announcement strategy and writes gift announcements. Assesses need for talking points for FAS fundraisers on University topics; drafts and disseminates talking points and/or leads fundraiser training on messaging.
Project-manages content work and oversees one Full time writer/editor responsible for content and messaging creation.
Bachelor's degree required, as well as a minimum of seven years of communications, marketing, and writing experience, preferably in a higher education or complex nonprofit environment.
Experience writing and translating messages successfully across a variety of audiences and channels is essential.
Must be a self-starter comfortable working independently, building consensus, and influencing across teams.
The ideal candidate is creative, intellectually curious, and academically minded with an aptitude for building meaningful and productive relationships with colleagues.
Knowledge of fundraising fundamentals preferred. Willingness to learn required.
Knowledge of marketing analytics and experience using analytics to inform communications strategy highly desired.
